A Living Legend – The American Trucker

The guy who drives a long haul truck has always been of a special breed, yet to
many whose lives are rarely crossed by a major highway, this vital member of our
country could just as well live on another planet.

It has only been in recent decades that the general population has come to know
something near an understanding of what a trucker’s life entails.  It first began
some years ago with the completion of the Interstate Highway System.  From that
point going forward the status of the trucker rose, along with his standard of living.

The stereotype, blue-collared character in a fancy shirt and western boots, whose
rig is the pride of the highway, whose road judgment is widely respected and
whose lifestyle is increasingly envied.  This is the independent trucker straight out
of Smokey and the Bandit – and is to a greater extent still the independent trucker
of today.
