Truck and Trailer Problems

The security of parked vehicles themselves is almost as almost as bad
as the areas where they are left.  Most cab doors are left unlocked,
making entrance easy, but even in cases where the driver locks the cab
door, locks can often be broken.

Trailer security is maintained by locks and seals.  But locks placed
on trailers are frequently the cheap type (usuallypurchased
at Home Depot).  Most professional truck and trailer thieves
can remove these locks very easily.

Pure carlessness is a major factor in trailer thefts.  Trailers are
left parked on street or lots, unattended and without locks and/or
seals - inviting anyone with a tractor to haul them away.

The answer is better security locks on trailers and using these locks
at all times.

Trucking companies have cooperated with law enforcement in several
areas of the country to set up communications in case a truck is
stolen.  These have been quite efficient in recovering stolen rigs and
trailers.

A lot of truck operators seem to have accepted theft as a part of
business - an operating expense so to speak - but it doesn't have to
be that way.  An operator who gets hit by thieves is going to find
that losing cargo and equipment can cost a lot more than the
precaution he could have taken to prevent it.

Theft prevention is the key.
