Tractor and Trailer Need Washing/Lube

Washing the truck for maintenance reasons requires a different
approach than the :spit and polish" job aimed at appearance.  Let's
face it, washing is expensive, especially when you insist on a good
job.  But a fair job done frequently is wiser than an occasional job.

It helps to hose down the tractor in the back yard between trips if
nothing else.  The trouble areas should get the lion's share of
attention.  Be sure to wash down the inside of frame rails, suspension
hangers, springs and the upper fifth wheel.  These areas are prone to
corrosion.

Proper lubrication helps in keeping the truck clean.  It isn't true if
a little grease is good, a lot is better.  Surplus grease only runs
off - sometimes on the frame or axles where it can damage the wiring.
Surplus grease catches and holds dirt and grit.  On the fifth wheel
for example, these abrasives wear away the metal.  When lubricating
the fifth wheel, clean off any old grease and apply a thin film of
clean lubricant.
