More Dohm trucks were soon added to the fleet and by 1935, authority was purchased into Rockford, Rock Falls,
Chicago, and Clinton, Iowa. The company’s real growth, however, began in 1954 when authority to operate in
Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky was purchased.
Standard Freight was purchased in 1956, Chicago-Dubuque Transport in 1960, Ramus Truck Lines, Ohio in 1967
and Consolidating Forwarding, St. Louis in 1979.
Dohm now operated 27 terminals in the 9 Mid-western states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota,
Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin). A workforce of 1330 employees kept the fleet of 588 tractors, 76 pick-up and
delivery units, and 778 trailers operating passenger buses. By 1928, the new company entered the motor freight
industry and disposed of the buses.
In the early 30’s, ET & WNC actually pioneered “piggyback” freight operations from Boone, NC to Johnson City, TN.
This was due to the poor conditions of the mountain roads at that time. This service was continued for several
years until improved highway conditions made it no longer necessary.
The company realized its future lay in the rapidly growing motor freight industry and expanded operations to
include Virginia North Carolina and South Carolina. The acquisition of Inter City Trucking Company of Memphis
added routes in Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.
