Removing Decals
Ever have to remove a decorative decal from a tractor cab? These must be removed without paint damage to permit lettering and other information to be seen. Here are two methods used in the past:
Soften up and blow off one decal at a time with a steam cleaner. The plastic will come of, leave an outline of the adhesive still on the paint. Moisten the adhesive with a solvent applied with a cloth. After five minutes small blisters will appear, then use the steam cleaner again to remove loosened adhesive. When all the decals and adhesive are gone, rub out and polish the area to a uniform finish.
Heat one decal at a time with a heat gun. When adhesive under the decal softens, scrape the plastic decal off in on direction using a plastic scraper. Then soften the adhesive as describe above and rub out area.
