The modern trucker is the man who delivers the goods all over the nation. To him, trucking is
a way of life with rewards far outstripping mere cash in the bank.
This is an age in which human independence in commerce and industry is constantly being
eroded. The man at the wheel of a big rig is driving along one of the few remaining escape
routes to working dignity.
Indeed, his freedom in a regimented society would probably attract more than the occasional
twinge of envy from the college graduate with a corporate career mapped out all the way to
the executive suite.
Once the novice trucker has his rig, sorted out a load and got the paperwork licked, he joins
a band of true American as a small businessman. The attractions are many, but,
increasingly, the cry is heard from the owner-operators, that the only heroism now involved is
in fighting bureaucracy.
Freight lines are becoming more and more monopolistic. The independents now see
themselves as champions of individual freedom, fighting to retain their right to work.
