Participative management
Biggest problem in getting a total shop into the same program seems to be middle management - the men who are foremen and floor supervisors. Many of these individuals grew up with the autocratic feeling that hourly employees didn't want to work and should be assigned to repetitious type tasks that require little or no thought.
The school of participative management doesn't advocate lack of control and direction. Rather, the idea is giving workers a better understanding of what they are doing, why they are doing it, and what overall company objectives are.
Supervisors who can lead an direct in this type of shop atmosphere must be considerably more skilled than those who simply know the mechanical job requirements.
