The Early Days In Trucking

Back in the day the average truck driver didn't worry much about smoke
or noise his truck was making or whether the ride was smooth or not.
He had other worries, things like whether he would make it through the
next trip without freezing to death or whether he was going to get
stuck in the next mudhole up the road - if there was a road.

In those days a good road, if there was a road - was one with some
rock and gravel on it.  Many of the trucks back in the day didn't have
cabs or windshields.  And some of the tops were made out of old tarps
or curtains - but of course they would get wet and not help much
against the cold and rain.

But always the toughest part of trucking back then were the wet spots.
When a trucker came upon a mud hole - he was in trouble if it had any
length to it.  All the trucker could do is put the truck in low to mid
gear and just barrel through it.  Sometimes bales of hay was scattered
across a hole to make it through.
