Common-Sense Security

Here are some common sense rules to go by:

Drivers should refrain from discussing, with anyone, the type of cargo
they are hauling.  Fleets should be sure drivers of high risk cargoes
are trustworthy.

Whenever possible, have two units travel together, particularly when
they are carrying high risk cargoes.

When at truck stops and traveling together, one driver should stay in
the cab while the other eats.  Do not leave valuable cargo units
unattended when stopped.

Vary your stopping schedule as much as possible as a security measure.
If you establish a set pattern, it is easy for a thief to plan his
schedule around yours.

Lock the cab at all times when the truck is unattended.  While parked,
keep the rig in sight whenever possible.

Do not pick up hitchhikers.

Make sure all units re easily identifiable.  One recommended procedure
is to paint initials and unit numbers in heavy black letters on top of
trailer and tractor.  Black letters and numbers on orange background,
together with some identifying insignia such as two diagonal stripes,
are suggested for the trailer top.  This enables police helicopters to
identify the units once they have been alerted.  Make certain the
vehicle identification numbers on equipment are accurately recorded.
