The All Important Fifth Wheel
They are sturdy, virtually trouble free and built to last forever. As a result, fifth wheels are frequently the tractor component most taken for granted. There is the danger of driver neglect and or abuse that can trigger a serious accident on the highway. That is why its always good to keep your fifth wheel in good working condition.
Remember, the only link between a highway tractor and the tons of payload and semi-trailer behind it is a steel pin two inches in diameter - secured by locking devices that, to the naked eye, may look even more fragile.
When selecting a fifth wheel - you have three basics to look at: locking mechanism, mounting device and the fabricated construction.
It is always good to check for cracks at the base of the kingpin. Also check for excessive kingpin wear or loose mounting plate on towed vehicle.
You should keep your fifth wheel jaws and kingpins in good working order - preventive maintenance is the key.
